My fine-art works come into being as photographs. Their painterly quality develops through the material they are printed on. The photograph loses its typical surface and comes to look almost like a painting.

W/ARE
Female presence. Seen differently.
W/ARE is the artistic world of Jutta Joy Gross. At its centre stands female presence – not as an ideal or a surface for projection, but as an independent, many-layered personality.
The works come into being between deliberate staging and the moment that cannot be fully planned. Light, body, bearing and space are reduced to what matters. What counts is not perfection but presence.
My photographs are not intended as classical portraits. In light, surface, colour and staging they often develop an almost painterly quality.
Photography is a starting point for me, not a limit.
Part of the work remains as a limited photographic edition. Selected works I develop further into autonomous art objects and unique pieces – through unusual supports, hand-worked interventions or finishing with 24-carat gold and silver.

About
Jutta Joy Gross
Visual Artist working with Photography
For more than four decades I worked as head make-up artist and stylist in national and international film productions, and trained make-up professionals in my own school.
I transformed people, helped shape characters and watched actresses and actors slip into completely different roles in front of the camera. What always interested me was who was behind those roles.
At 64 I no longer wanted only to contribute to other people's images. I had so many ideas of my own. So I began to realise them myself, through photography.
My visual language is shaped by film. Today I bring together everything that has always fascinated me: people, fashion, styling, light and extraordinary staging.
At the centre of my art is the woman.
“I am not interested in the perfect woman. I am interested in the moment when she stops defining herself through the eyes of others and is entirely herself.”
“My images do not come from a wish to make women more beautiful. They come from a wish to make women visible beyond judgement.”
I love developing a visual world of its own out of a single idea. The unplanned is allowed to happen along the way. Often that is exactly when the most interesting images emerge.
For me, art does not end with the photograph. Selected works I develop further with special materials and 24-carat gold leaf into autonomous art objects and unique pieces.
It is this territory between photography, object and painting that interests me.
My works draw this stance together: female presence, seen from my own artistic perspective – not as a role model, not as an ideal, but as something of its own.
My work has been exhibited, awarded and published internationally, among others in Milan, Seoul, Geneva and Stuttgart.
